Update on the UN’s stance on Holocaust education

Four days after I sent this letter, Lev Libeskind of the UN International Task Force (ITF) on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research sent me a statement by the ITF Chair given on September 3: “With great concern, the ITF Chair has become aware of recent statements made by members of Hamas regarding efforts of the United Nations to introduce education about the Holocaust into the Gaza school system.” I wrote Mr. Libeskind back:

“Thank you for returning my e-mail. While I appreciate the statement by the ITF Chair, I am sure that you will agree with me that it could have been more forceful. For example, ‘becoming aware’ and expressing ‘great concern’ is one thing, but condemnation is quite another. Furthermore, ‘statements by Hamas’ is one thing, but Holocaust denial by Hamas is quite another. Perhaps you can be so kind as to forward these observations to the ITF Chair and ask him to clarify his position on the matter.”
