[The following email was sent to the World Jewish Congress (WJC)]
Bradley Burston of Ha’aretz and Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic have written scathing editorials on comments made by former chairman of the Governing Board of the WJC, Isi Liebler, concerning ultra left-wing Jews’ “efforts to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish state.” Both Burstein and Goldberg feel that this Liebler’s rhetoric was directed at J Street, the self described “pro-Israel, pro-peace” lobby in the United States. I do not know if this was Liebler’s intent. I have nothing but contempt for figures such as Norman Finkelstein and Ilan Pappe who distort Jewish history and work toward the destruction of the Jewish state, but I do not believe that J Street is in the same category and I would find it surprising if the WJC did. I think it would benefit the WJC to clarify its stance by saying something to the effect that support of the Israeli political left is legitimate and not to be equated with “efforts to demonize and delegitimize the Jewish state.” Thank you.
